The Association of Child Abuse Lawyers was set up for the benefit of lawyers, experts and other professionals dealing with legal cases involving the physical, sexual or emotional abuse of children and adults abused in childhood, as well as the mentally handicapped and others who were directly or indirectly affected by abuse.
It was formed in late 1997 as a result of concerns from members of the legal profession that people who had been abused were either unable to find lawyers to take on their cases or were experiencing poor standards of advice and assistance from those lawyers whom they had instructed. There were also concerns about the ability of lawyers and other experts to deal effectively with these traumatic cases.
As well as the benefits to child abuse solicitors from the membership of ACAL, the association also campaigns for changes to child abuse law and the way such cases are dealt with by the courts and the Legal Services Commission. Recently ACAL has been involved with campaigns including supporting legal campaigner Tom Perry in his attempts to ban the word “Historic” from being used in abuse cases and it has also called for the Legal Services Commission to stop plans to deduct 25% of the compensation awarded to claimants in abuse cases in order to fund Legal Aid.
