National Adoption Week Launches

This week is National Adoption Week 2012.

Supported by the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) as well as groups such as After Adoption and Adoption Matters Northwest, the campaign aims to reach people across the UK who might be considering adopting a child. As well as hoping to attract new people to become adopters, National Adoption week also aims to engage with people whose lives have been affected by adoption, whether that’s because a member of their family was adopted or they themselves were adopted.

According statistics on the BAAF website, in March this year there were over 62,000 children in the care of local authorities in the UK. This figure includes those who were living with foster carers as well as those in children’s homes, hostels, placements in the community and other residential settings. Despite this, the rate of adoptions remains low, with only 3,450 children being adopted from care during the year ending March 31st 2012. The adoption rate of older children aged 10-18 in particular is especially low when compared with younger children. This can be due to a variety of factors including the perception that older children may be more demanding on their adoptive parents and previous National Adoption Weeks have highlighted the issues faced by older children in care.

At Canter Levin & Berg Solicitors, our family department works extensively with people affected by all aspects of the adoption process, including adoptive parents and also those families who are faced with having one or more of their children taken into care. Whether you are looking to adopt, or you would like legal advice if your children are being placed into local authority care, we are here to help. Our family solicitors aim to take an understanding approach to these delicate legal issues so that the needs of children involved in the adoption process are of paramount concern.
